What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

Answer engine optimization is the work of making your company easy for AI answer engines to find, understand, trust and cite when buyers ask questions in your category.

A working definition

An answer engine is any system that responds to a question with a synthesized answer instead of a list of links: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Copilot and similar assistants. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the set of practices that raise the odds your brand is cited (linked as a source) or mentioned (named in the answer) when a buyer asks a relevant question.

You will also see the term generative engine optimization (GEO). The two labels describe largely the same goal. In practice, teams use them interchangeably.

How answer engines choose what to say

Most answer engines combine two things: what the underlying model learned during training, and what it retrieves at answer time from a search index or a live web fetch. When retrieval is involved, the engine runs one or more searches, reads a handful of pages, and writes an answer that often links to some of them. That means three things matter:

  • Access. The engine's crawler or fetcher has to be allowed to read your pages (robots.txt, firewall and bot rules).
  • Relevance. You need a page that directly answers the question being asked, in words a buyer would use.
  • Corroboration. Engines tend to repeat claims they can find in several credible places, not only on your own site.

What AEO work involves

1. A buyer-question map

List the questions buyers ask before they talk to sales: category questions ("what is…"), shortlist questions ("best X for Y"), comparison and alternatives questions, pricing and implementation questions. This list becomes your measurement set.

2. Citable pages

Give each important question a page that answers it clearly near the top, with specifics an engine can quote: what you do, for whom, how it works, what it costs if you publish pricing, and how you differ.

3. Entity clarity

Describe your company the same way everywhere: name, category, audience and core offer should match across your site, social profiles, directories and partner pages.

4. Third-party presence

Reviews, directories, industry publications, documentation, podcasts and community discussions are common sources for AI answers. Earned, accurate presence there matters as much as your own pages.

5. Technical access

Make sure the crawlers of the engines you care about are not blocked, pages render without heavy client-side scripts, and structured data matches what is visible on the page.

How to measure it

There is no single ranking position in an AI answer, and answers vary from run to run. A practical measure is Share of Answer: across a fixed set of buyer questions and engines, how often your brand is cited or mentioned compared with competitors. Track the same question set over time so changes are comparable.

What AEO is not

AEO cannot guarantee placement in any engine, and organic answers are not for sale. Schema markup and an llms.txt file can help machines read your site, but neither is a switch that makes an engine recommend you. Durable results come from clear pages, consistent positioning and credible third-party coverage.

The free AnswerGTM snapshot reads one public page of your website, drafts up to five buyer questions, and checks the answer engines that are configured. You can remove questions before anything is measured. The score is free; add an email to see the full answers.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO different from SEO?

They overlap heavily. Both depend on crawlable, helpful pages and authority. AEO adds a focus on being cited or named inside AI-generated answers, on longer conversational questions, and on third-party sources that answer engines read.

Can you pay to appear in AI answers?

Not in organic answers. Some AI surfaces show clearly labeled ads, which are separate from the organic answer. Organic citations and mentions have to be earned through content, positioning and third-party coverage.

How long does AEO take to show results?

There is no fixed timeline. Engines re-crawl and update at different speeds, and answers vary between runs. Measure a fixed set of buyer questions over several weeks rather than judging from a single answer.

Do I need special schema markup for AEO?

No markup guarantees inclusion. Accurate structured data such as Organization, Product or Service and FAQ markup can make your pages easier to interpret, but it only helps when it matches content that is visible on the page.
