Perplexity brand visibility for B2B companies
Perplexity answers questions by searching the web and showing numbered citations next to its answer. That makes it one of the more transparent answer engines: you can see which sources it used, and you can work on becoming one of them.
How Perplexity builds an answer
For most questions, Perplexity runs searches, reads a set of pages and writes a summary with inline citations. The cited sources are visible to the user, so being cited is both a visibility signal and a path to referral traffic.
Perplexity's crawlers
- PerplexityBot crawls pages so they can be surfaced and linked in Perplexity's results.
- Perplexity-User fetches pages when a user's question requires a visit. Perplexity describes these as user-initiated requests.
If you want to be cited, check that robots.txt and your CDN or firewall rules do not block these agents.
What tends to get cited
Pages that answer the exact question
A focused page that states the answer early is easier to cite than a broad page that mentions the topic in passing.
Current, specific information
Dated content, visible update dates and concrete details (scope, audience, pricing model, integrations) help an engine decide a page is relevant and trustworthy.
Credible third-party pages
Perplexity often cites reviews, directories, publications and community discussions alongside vendor sites. Accurate coverage there broadens the set of pages that can mention you.
Practical steps for B2B teams
- List 10–20 buyer questions for your category and ask them in Perplexity. Note which sources are cited.
- For questions where competitors or third parties are cited and you are not, decide whether you need a dedicated page, a better answer on an existing page, or presence on the cited third-party site.
- Fix technical access first: crawler rules, server-rendered HTML and clean canonical URLs.
- Re-check the same questions on a schedule and track citation share over time.
Measuring Perplexity visibility
Because citations are shown, you can count them directly: for each question, record whether your domain is cited, whether your brand is named, and which competitors appear. Referral visits from perplexity.ai in your analytics are a useful second signal.
Check your own AI visibility
The free AnswerGTM snapshot reads one public page of your website, drafts up to five buyer questions, and checks the answer engines that are configured. You can remove questions before anything is measured. The score is free; add an email to see the full answers.
Frequently asked questions
Does Perplexity show where its answers come from?
Yes. Perplexity typically displays numbered citations linking to the sources it used, which lets you see whether your site or a competitor's was cited.
Which user agents does Perplexity use?
Perplexity documents PerplexityBot, which crawls pages for its search results, and Perplexity-User, which fetches pages in response to user requests.
Why is a competitor cited instead of us?
Common reasons are that their page answers the question more directly, is more current, or is supported by third-party coverage the engine trusts. Compare the cited page with yours for the same question.
Can I see Perplexity traffic in my analytics?
Often, yes. Visits from Perplexity citations usually arrive with perplexity.ai as the referrer, though some visits may lack referrer data.
