How to get your brand recommended by ChatGPT
There is no form to submit and no paid placement in ChatGPT's organic answers. What you can control is whether OpenAI's systems can read your site, whether you have clear pages for the questions buyers ask, and whether credible sources describe you consistently.
How ChatGPT forms an answer
ChatGPT answers from two sources: what the model learned during training, and, when search is used, pages it retrieves from the web at answer time. Search answers usually show the sources they drew on. Your goal is to be one of the sources retrieved and to be described accurately in both modes.
Step 1: Let OpenAI's crawlers read your site
OpenAI documents separate user agents with different jobs:
- OAI-SearchBot discovers pages for ChatGPT's search features.
- ChatGPT-User fetches pages when a user's request triggers a visit.
- GPTBot collects content that may be used to train models.
Check robots.txt and any firewall or bot-management rules at your CDN. A site can unintentionally block these agents with a broad "block bots" setting.
Step 2: Map the questions buyers actually ask
Write down the prompts a buyer would type before contacting you: "best [category] for [audience]", "[competitor] alternatives", "how to [job your product does]", "how much does [category] cost". Keep the list stable so you can re-check it later.
Step 3: Publish pages that answer those questions directly
For each important question, have a page whose opening paragraph answers it plainly. Name your category and audience explicitly, explain how you differ, and keep facts like pricing, integrations and availability current. Comparison and use-case pages are often more useful to an answer engine than a general homepage.
Step 4: Be present where ChatGPT looks
Search-backed answers frequently cite third-party pages: review sites, directories, industry publications, documentation and community threads. Accurate profiles and genuine coverage in those places give the engine independent confirmation of what you do.
Step 5: Keep your entity consistent
Use the same company name, category description and audience across your site, LinkedIn, directories and partner pages. Inconsistent descriptions make it harder for any system to summarize you correctly.
Step 6: Measure with a repeatable question set
Answers change between runs and over time. Ask the same questions on a schedule, record whether you are cited or named and who appears instead, and judge progress by the trend.
Check your own AI visibility
The free AnswerGTM snapshot reads one public page of your website, drafts up to five buyer questions, and checks the answer engines that are configured. You can remove questions before anything is measured. The score is free; add an email to see the full answers.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay OpenAI to have ChatGPT recommend my company?
No. Organic ChatGPT answers are not for sale. Any advertising that appears in AI products is labeled and separate from the organic answer.
Why does ChatGPT give different answers to the same question?
Responses are generated, not looked up, and search results can change between requests. That is why visibility should be measured across a set of questions asked repeatedly, not judged from one answer.
If I block GPTBot, will I disappear from ChatGPT search?
OpenAI treats GPTBot (training) and OAI-SearchBot (search) as separate user agents with separate robots.txt controls. To appear in ChatGPT search answers, OAI-SearchBot needs access to your pages.
How can I check whether ChatGPT mentions my company?
Ask a fixed set of buyer questions and record whether your brand is cited or named, and which competitors appear. The free AnswerGTM snapshot runs a small version of this check on your website.
