Google AI Overviews for B2B: how to get cited

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear in Google Search with links to supporting pages. Google states there are no special technical requirements beyond normal Search eligibility, which means the work is mostly strong SEO aimed at the questions B2B buyers ask.

What AI Overviews are

For some queries, Google shows an AI-generated overview above or among the regular results, with links to pages that support it. AI Mode offers a longer, conversational version of the same idea. Both draw on Google's search index.

Eligibility, according to Google

  • The page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet.
  • There is no separate markup or submission process for AI Overviews.
  • Google's general guidance applies: helpful, reliable, people-first content and a good page experience.

Controls that do and do not apply

Google-Extended is a robots.txt token that controls whether content is used for Gemini models and related products. Google states it does not affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search, so it is not the lever for AI Overviews.

The controls that affect how your content appears in Search features, including AI Overviews, are the snippet controls: nosnippet, max-snippet and the data-nosnippet attribute. Restricting snippets also restricts how your content can be shown.

What helps B2B pages get cited

Answer evaluation questions directly

B2B buyers ask about categories, comparisons, implementation and cost. Pages that address those questions plainly, near the top, give Google clear passages to link.

Be specific about scope

State who the product or service is for, what it does and does not do, and how it is priced or packaged. Vague positioning is hard to summarize.

Keep structured data honest

Organization, Product or Service and breadcrumb markup help Google understand a page, but only when they match visible content.

Earn corroboration

Mentions on credible industry sites and accurate directory profiles support the authority signals Search already uses.

How to measure

Google includes traffic from AI features in the overall Search performance data in Search Console, without a separate AI Overviews breakdown. To know whether you are cited, check your priority queries directly and record which pages are linked, alongside your normal Search Console reporting.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need special markup to appear in AI Overviews?

No. Google says pages need to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Search; there is no additional technical requirement or submission process.

Does blocking Google-Extended remove my site from AI Overviews?

No. Google states that Google-Extended does not affect inclusion in Google Search. AI Overviews are part of Search and follow Search controls such as nosnippet and max-snippet.

Can I see AI Overviews traffic in Search Console?

Traffic from Google's AI features is included in Search Console's overall Search performance data, but it is not reported as a separate AI Overviews segment.

Are AI Overviews shown for B2B queries?

They can appear for many kinds of queries, including informational and evaluation questions common in B2B research. Whether one appears depends on the query, so check your own priority questions.
